From the Master Series: Lou Jones Workshop

Wednesday, May 9, 2007 at 8:00 PM NEW ENGLAND SCHOOL OF PHOTOGRAPHY Boston, MA 02215

Do you have something to show? Do you have something to say?

What is a documentary photograph?« (Solomon-Godeau 1991: 169). This question is asked by Abigail Solomon-Godeau who supplies right away twoanswers: »With equal justice one might respond by saying just about everything or alternatively, just about nothing! This very contradiction is symptomatic of the discourse. The first idea, that basically any photograph is documentary, is one that can be traced throughout the entire history of photography. Therefore it seems to be useful to begin by further elaborating on this aspect.

Documentary photography is supposed to depict first hand experience in a faithful and direct manner. Consequently, authenticity is considered to be one of the most significant aspects of documentary photography.

The power of photography , especially of documentary photographs ,is to visualize certain aspects of life or the world and to prove and circumstantiate the narrative going along with it.

The intention of this kind of photography is to show something as it is which means, the author of the photograph tries as far as possible to achieve a congruency between her own perception of reality and the reality shown in the image.

Improve your photographic skills with guidance from one the best photographers in this First Master series .
