The birthplace of the American flag, Union Square in Somerville embodies the "melting pot" ideal of ethnic diversity. Korean, Indian, Haitian, Brazilian, San Salvadoran, Portuguese, Irish, and Italian restaurants, markets, and businesses stand side by side, block by block, a cornucopia of cultures comingling in a single neighborhood. I shot these candid portraits of residents and their friends as they celebrated at the many festivals the Somerville Arts Council's ArtsUnion holds from May through September, as well as the weekly Farmer's Market.
