Photoshop I: Introduction and File Management
This first workshop is suited for people with no, or very little, working knowledge of Photoshop. As with each of the classes, instruction will not be rushed, and you will be provided with a detailed booklet of all the information being covered.
Summary:
This session will include a basic tour of the Photoshop interface and an introduction to file formats used by photographers. Several techniques for sizing, rotating, and cropping images for print and the web will be presented, along with useful tools for automating tasks and processing batches of photos.

Tour of the Photoshop interface:
- Menu commands
- Tool buttons
- The Options Bar
- Palettes
- Layers
Basic instruction on crucial tasks:
- Introduction to the PSD, TIFF, RAW, and JPEG file formats
- Backing up uncompressed copies of your work
- Settings for scanning prints and slides
- Panning and zooming your photo with the Navigator controls
- Cropping photographs while keeping a photographic aspect ratio
- USing the free transform tool to fix distorted perspective
- Setting the resolution and image size for prints
- Fixing mistakes with the undo command and history palette
- Balancing quality and file size in pictures saved for the web/email
- Creating thumbnail icons of your work
Advanced automation features
- A quick introduction to actions and batches
- Creating a contact sheet
- Creating a website photo gallery

About the instructor:
David Kelleher is a teacher and interactive media producer. His recent freelance projects include an e-learning application for Intel, 3D animation for a National Geographic television program, and marketing CD-ROMs and DVDs for diamond and jewelry manufacturer Eugene Biro.
